Tips To Deal With Broken Fence: Easiest Solutions To Know

A well-maintained fence not only enhances the aesthetics of your property but also ensures safety and privacy. You can replace the fence posts, set the fence panel, replace damaged fence fabric, and repair a sagging gate to improve the structure and function of your fence. Keeping a fence in good condition isn’t that difficult. You can do most fence repairs yourself, but you might have to do some digging.

Like any other structure, fences will experience some wear and tear over time. Various problems can occur, from weather damage to general wear and tear. Inspecting your fence is important to prevent small issues from turning into major repairs. If you find it difficult, contacting your local fence company for help is a great option.

How To Repair A Broken Fence?

Before installing a new fence, it is better to try fixing your older ones. Here are some great solutions that you can try to repair your fence and improve their purpose:

Replace Posts

It is a common repair because wooden posts rot and cause the fence to lean. This repair isn’t difficult. You will need a 2×4 brace, a reciprocating saw, a digging bar, concrete, a drill, and some screws.

  • Support a fence panel on either side of the post from each side of the fence.
  • Use the reciprocating saw to cut the nails that attach the fence rails to the posts.
  • Once the post is free, use the force of a hammer to rip it out of the ground, smash the concrete with a sledgehammer, and dig it out of the ground.
  • Insert a new post plumb, support it, and fill the hole with new concrete.
  • Reattach the fence rails with 3-inch screws and remove the posts once the concrete has hardened.

Reinforce The Fence Panel

If your wooden fence comprises 4×8 panels and one is damaged, here’s how to replace a broken fence panel. You will need a drill, screws, and some scrap wood.

  • Screw a wooden block to the post on either side of the damaged panel and directly below the bottom rail.
  • Remove the screws that secure the panel to the post, or cut them off with a reciprocating saw.
  • Drop the panel onto the blocks and remove the panel.
  • Place the new panel onto the blocks. Drill pocket screw holes into the rails and screw in 3″ screws to secure the panel to the posts.
  • Remove the support blocks, and stain or paint the fence panel to match the rest.

Replace the Damaged Fence Fabric

You may need to replace a section of chain link fence fabric that weather, animals, or vehicles have damaged. You will need a pair of pliers and a new roll of fence fabric to do so.

  • Start by removing the straps that secure the broken fence fabric to the top and bottom rails.
  • Select the wire on either side of the damaged area.
  • Untwist the top and bottom wires with pliers and remove them by twisting them counterclockwise like a corkscrew.
  • Measure a replacement section that is a little longer, untwist the wire as before, and remove it from the roll.
  • Attach the replacement fence to the existing fence by twisting the wire sections in the opposite direction (clockwise), then tie the top and bottom of the new fence to the railings.

Repair A Sagging Fence Gate

Over time, as fence gates wear and the fasteners become loose, the other side of the gate hinge can sag. When this happens, the gate can drag and become difficult to open and close. You need to raise and “level” the gate to fix this. Luckily, some easy fence repair kits can solve this problem.

One is a simple anti-sag cable kit available at most hardware stores. There are also adjustable metal brace sets for fence gates. These sets work similarly by lifting the back corners of the gate to prevent pulling. They help maintain uniform goal spacing on the sides and bottom.

Which Fence Is The Easiest To Maintain?

Vinyl fences are maintenance-free fences, making them a popular choice. They come in various patterns and colors to match different home colors. Plus, tall vinyl fence panels are one of the best options for complete privacy in your backyard. When it comes to spring cleaning, vinyl is a truly low-maintenance fence option, as all it takes is a wash with soap and water to keep it looking its best.

Aluminum fences make a statement with their elegant style and require minimum fence repair. While black aluminum is eye-catching, it comes in many more colors and styles, and the options are growing yearly. When it comes to low-maintenance fences, aluminum is truly unbeatable. Aluminum doesn’t need paint or stain to prevent rotting. Even better, dark aluminum fences don’t show dirt so much that they don’t even need washing yearly.
